About Brock McGoff

Brock McGoff started The Modest Man while working a job he disliked — by his own telling, he quit, rented out his apartment, and spent three months in South America building the site, crediting Tim Ferriss’s The 4-Hour Workweek as the push. The blog became a YouTube channel (created in 2015) built around a gap he knew personally: at 5'6", most style advice simply was not written for men his size. His sizes anchor the teaching — almost every video is a fit lesson first, whether the subject is sleeve rolls, suit proportions, inseams, or watches sized for smaller wrists.

The wardrobe he teaches is best understood as a habit, not a look. Buy a small set of versatile, neutral, well-fitting pieces; learn the few rules that make them combine (colour families, shade contrast, proportions that lengthen a shorter frame); maintain and tailor what you own; and let cost per wear, not novelty, judge a purchase. His minimal shirt, pants, and shoe collections and his wardrobe-essentials builds all run the same loop — which is why his library sits in our Habits & Productivity shelf even though its subject is clothing: style, for McGoff, is one branch of intentional living, alongside everyday carry, home upgrades, and the purchase-regret lists where he audits his own buying.

The channel’s centre of gravity has widened with him. The early teaching run (socks, scarves, sleeve rolls, how a suit should fit) built the audience — his most-viewed videos are still pure technique — while recent years add Millennial-dad life: graceful aging, home and family purchases, and a growing share of product roundups. The doctrine underneath has not moved: fewer, better things, chosen deliberately and kept for years.
