A Bear, an AR-15, and a Home Invasion

About this video

Colion interviews a homeowner named Earl (Marty) who defended himself against a black bear that broke into his home at night. Colion uses the interview to explore Marty’s equipment choices, tactics, and decision-making during the encounter, emphasizing lessons about home defense setups, weapon lights, suppressors, and the advantages Colion sees in AR-15 platform rifles for home defense. Colion frames the conversation around what viewers can learn from Marty’s successful response to an unexpected threat.

Key takeaways

• Colion highlights Marty’s use of a suppressed AR-15 pistol, noting that the suppressor preserved Marty’s hearing and didn’t wake all his children—benefits Colion argues apply to home defense scenarios
• Colion emphasizes the importance of a quality weapon-mounted light for target identification in low-light conditions, crediting Marty’s Surefire light as critical to identifying the bear and placing accurate shots
• Colion advocates for the AR-15 platform over handguns or shotguns for home defense, citing (through Marty’s experience) superior accuracy, controllability, terminal ballistics, and reduced overpenetration risk with proper ammunition selection
