How This Veteran Used His Love Of Firearms As An Outlet To Deal With Being Blown Up In Iraq

About this video

Colion interviews Omar “Crispy” Avila, a wounded Iraq War veteran and motivational figure, about his military service, injuries from an IED blast in 2007, his recovery journey, and how he found healing through firearms, hunting, and the outdoors. Colion and Crispy discuss their shared passion for shooting, home defense setups, truck culture, and the therapeutic power of hunting, with Crispy describing how these activities helped him reclaim his life after severe burns and amputation.

Key takeaways

• Colion learns how Crispy adopted his nickname after surviving an IED attack that left him with 75% burns and a below-knee amputation, choosing to ‘own’ his injuries rather than let them define him negatively.
• Crispy shares with Colion his preference for AR-platform rifles (specifically an AR-9) for home defense due to his comfort and proficiency with rifles, and describes how he modified his trigger finger surgically to shoot again post-injury.
• Colion hears Crispy explain that hunting became his most effective therapy after combat trauma—more powerful than any medication—providing mental reset, connection to nature, and purpose through providing food for his family and community.
