I Faced Down a Grizzly with a 300 Win Mag — Here’s What Happened

About this video

Colion sits down with Christian Schaffer, founder of Charge Supply (maker of preparedness gear), to discuss outdoor adventures, wildlife encounters, and self-reliance. Christian recounts close calls with grizzly bears and mountain lions during hunts in Alaska and Utah, while Colion shares his own experiences hunting buffalo and elk as a self-described ‘city rat’ learning to embrace the outdoors. They compare notes on carrying firearms in bear country (10mm vs. 9mm vs. rifle calibers), discuss the importance of emergency preparedness and basic survival skills, and explore how modern technology (GPS watches, thermal optics) can prevent wilderness disasters.

Key takeaways

• Colion describes Christian’s perspective that bears and mountain lions pose serious threats in the wild, and Christian argues that 10mm with proper practice is preferable to 9mm or .45 for bear defense due to penetration concerns
• Christian shares his philosophy that no one should get lost in the wilderness anymore because GPS devices (even basic smartphone map pins) allow tracking in cardinal directions even without cell signal
• Colion reports Christian’s belief that modern society has become dangerously unprepared for emergencies, citing the 15% year-over-year increase in billion-dollar disasters while basic life skills (changing tires, first aid) are declining
