Martial Arts Scams & Cults? Inside the Dark Side And Self Defense

About this video

Colion sits down with Rob from McDojo Life to discuss Rob’s work exposing fraud and misconduct in the martial arts industry. Rob shares how he started his platform after a simple question from a white belt student, explains his five core rules for identifying illegitimate martial arts schools (including lying about credentials, shady business practices, and cult-like behavior), and draws parallels between martial arts fraud and issues in the firearms training world. The conversation explores the importance of pressure-testing skills, the pitfalls of hazing rituals like belt gauntlets, and why having self-defense equalizers (including firearms) matters as people age beyond their physical prime.

Key takeaways

• Colion learns Rob’s five-rule framework for identifying fraudulent martial arts schools: lying about credentials, shady business practices, dangerous training methods, lack of pressure-testing, and cult-like behavior
• Rob argues to Colion that martial arts and religion share structural similarities and only become cults when the focus shifts from serving the student to serving the leader
• Colion and Rob discuss how training under duress (sparring, competition, pressure-testing) is essential—Colion shares his methods for adding pressure to firearms training, while Rob emphasizes that technique alone without stress-testing leads to failure in real confrontations
