Philly Mayor Just Said Second Amendment Wasn't Written For AR-15s, AK-47s, Or Multiple Shot Clips

About this video

Colion criticizes Philadelphia’s mayor for blaming gun availability after a Temple University officer shooting, arguing that the mayor misrepresents both the difficulty of purchasing firearms and the Founders’ intent behind the Second Amendment. Colion contends that the mayor ignores Philadelphia’s other policy failures and points to safe, gun-friendly states as evidence that gun laws aren’t the determining factor in violence. He frames the Second Amendment as fundamentally about individual empowerment and self-defense.

Key takeaways

• Colion argues that Philadelphia’s gun purchasing process is already more restrictive than buying alcohol, involving dual background checks that felons cannot pass
• Colion asserts that the Founders were aware of mass violence and advancing firearm technology when drafting the Second Amendment, and that musket-era arguments ignore the amendment’s purpose of resisting tyranny
• Colion points to data he presents showing that seven of the ten safest U.S. states have gun-friendly laws, which he says undermines the mayor’s blame on gun availability for Philadelphia’s violence
