Taran Tactical: “John Wick Changed Hollywood” (And Here’s Why)

About this video

Colion sits down with firearms trainer Taran Butler to discuss Taran’s influential work preparing actors for action films, particularly the John Wick franchise. Taran shares his training philosophy—emphasizing fun, practical action-shooting techniques over drill-sergeant intensity—and describes how his competitive multi-gun background shaped Hollywood’s modern gun-fight choreography. He recounts working with celebrities from Keanu Reeves to Austin Butler, Lewis Hamilton, and others, explaining how his approach has converted many actors into gun owners and Second Amendment supporters.

Key takeaways

• Colion argues that Taran Butler revolutionized Hollywood firearms training by bringing competitive multi-gun (3-Gun, USPSA, IDPA) principles to film, creating the distinctive John Wick shooting style that has since become its own genre.
• Taran’s training philosophy, according to Colion, centers on making firearms instruction fun and accessible rather than intimidating, which he believes leads to better performance on screen and often converts anti-gun actors into gun owners.
• Colion highlights that many A-list actors—including Austin Butler, Michael B. Jordan, Henry Cavill, and Halle Berry—have trained with Taran, with Lewis Hamilton standing out as a natural who achieved exceptional proficiency in a single five-hour session despite never having shot before.
