The British View Of Guns in America Falls Apart With This Data

About this video

Colion responds to perceptions of America as dangerous by analyzing FBI murder statistics through research by economist John Lott. He argues that America’s murder rate is concentrated in approximately 1-2% of counties and specific 10-block areas within them, with 53% of counties recording zero murders annually. Colion contends that this concentration pattern undermines the case for nationwide gun restrictions, since he believes the violence is geographically limited and committed by repeat offenders already prohibited from firearm ownership.

Key takeaways

• Colion argues that media coverage creates a distorted perception of gun violence in America, citing Lott’s finding that major newspapers ran 2,700 gun crime stories versus only 10 defensive gun use stories in one year
• According to Colion’s presentation of Lott’s research, 31 counties (1% of all U.S. counties) account for 41% of murders, while 53% of counties record zero murders annually, suggesting hyper-concentrated violence rather than widespread danger
• Colion maintains that national gun control policies are ineffective because he believes violence is concentrated in small areas and committed by people already prohibited from gun ownership, while restrictions impact law-abiding citizens in safe areas
• Colion emphasizes that communities bearing the heaviest burden of violence are, in his view, harmed by policies restricting their ability to arm themselves for self-defense, especially given court rulings he cites about police having no duty to protect individuals
