The Problem With AKs in America - With American AK Legend Jim Fuller

About this video

Fuller describes the technical challenges of building AK rifles, explains what he views as common quality and spec inconsistencies in the platform, and discusses his current weapon development project with Travis Haley. He also offers his perspective on various calibers, the AK versus AR debate, and the importance of thorough testing before releasing products.

Key takeaways

• Fuller argues that AK building is exceptionally difficult because, according to him, there are no consistent specs across countries or even within Russian production—he reports encountering four different trunnion sizes that complicate barrel fitting
• He emphasizes his testing philosophy: Fuller states he will not release his new design until it passes 20,000 rounds through a machine gun prototype without failure, because he views shortcuts as potentially life-threatening for end users
• Fuller explains his view that while the AK’s design brilliance allows poorly built examples to still function initially, he believes many will fail after several thousand rounds due to loose tolerances and mismatched foreign parts
