Training For A Gunfight: This One Skill Matters More Than Accuracy

About this video

Colion argues that while traditional sight-focused shooting fundamentals are important, shooters should also train instinctive shooting techniques because real self-defense situations rarely allow for perfect sight alignment. He demonstrates and teaches drills for target-focused shooting, one-handed draws (especially weak-hand), and what he calls ‘self-defense accuracy’—prioritizing fast, effective hits over tight groups. Colion emphasizes that training should include realistic, imperfect scenarios because under stress, people default to the level of their training, not their ideal performance.

Key takeaways

• Colion teaches that traditional front-sight-focused shooting should be learned first as a foundation, but shooters must also practice instinctive, target-focused shooting because adrenaline and chaos make perfect sight pictures unlikely in real encounters
• According to Colion, one-handed shooting drills—especially with the weak hand—are essential because real fights may involve injury, obstacles, or holding objects, yet most people don’t train for these scenarios
• Colion distinguishes between ‘accuracy accuracy’ (tight groups) and ‘self-defense accuracy’ (fast, effective hits), arguing that speed matters more than precision when stopping a threat, and demonstrating that combat-focused shooting can be twice as fast even with wider shot patterns
