What It’s Really Like to Kill Before and After Finding Faith | Living Unafraid

About this video

Colion sits down with Eddie Penney, a former Navy SEAL with 16 years of service and seven combat deployments, to discuss Eddie’s journey from war to faith. Colion explores Eddie’s transition from elite operator to full-time father, his struggles with PTSD and identity, and how faith transformed his perspective on killing, service, and purpose. Eddie shares harrowing combat stories—including a near-death explosion and the moral weight of split-second decisions—and explains how his relationship with Christ reshaped his understanding of violence, self-control, and true strength.

Key takeaways

• Colion highlights Eddie’s distinction between his combat mindset then versus now: Eddie argues he has no regrets for lives taken in war, but deep regret for a shot not taken that might have saved innocent children from a suicide bomber
• According to Eddie’s account shared by Colion, the warrior mentality that served him overseas left him ill-equipped for fatherhood and civilian life—learning emotional presence and self-control became harder than any SEAL training
• Colion discusses Eddie’s view that true home defense is layered (dogs, lighting, awareness, locks) and that scenario-based training—not just paper targets—prepares you mentally and physically for real threat response
• Eddie describes to Colion how an inner voice (which he now attributes to God) told him to move seconds before a massive IED destroyed the position he’d just left, killing and maiming teammates—a moment that later drove his search for faith and meaning
