Why The FN SCAR Will Always Be A Legend

About this video

Colion traces the history and cultural impact of the FN SCAR rifle, from its origins as a Special Operations Command project in the late 1990s through its mixed military adoption and eventual status as a pop culture icon. He explains that while SOCOM originally sought a modular, multi-caliber rifle to replace the M4, the SCAR-L was discontinued by 2010 due to logistical realities, though the SCAR-H (Mark 17) found success in designated marksman roles. Colion argues the SCAR became legendary not by replacing the M4, but by earning respect in specialized combat roles and becoming a high-status civilian firearm immortalized in video games like Call of Duty and Fortnite.

Key takeaways

• Colion describes how SOCOM commissioned the SCAR in the late 1990s seeking a modular rifle family that could swap calibers and barrels, operate in all climates, and serve ambidextrous users—goals the M4 couldn’t meet
• Colion argues the SCAR’s reputation as a expensive ‘clout gun’ is partly deserved, but its piston system, modularity, ambidextrous controls, and sub-MOA accuracy make it a legitimately top-tier rifle beyond just status appeal
• Colion reports that FN has discontinued production of the SCAR, urging interested buyers to act quickly before remaining inventory is gone
