Why This Weird Rifle Is Way More Fun Than an AR-15

About this video

Colion reviews the Ruger Mini-14 Tactical rifle, describing it as a quirky, nostalgic firearm with an unusual aesthetic he calls ‘parts bin tactical.’ He breaks down the gun’s unique characteristics, including its vertical recoil impulse, folding stock, mechanical trigger, and classic A-Team connection. Colion argues the Mini-14 is reliable and fun to shoot but pushes back against claims that it’s better than an AR-15, while expressing interest in trying shorter-barrel and 300 Blackout variants.

Key takeaways

• Colion describes the Mini-14 Tactical as having a distinctive vertical recoil pattern and quirky ergonomics that make it engaging to shoot, though he recommends sticking with Ruger-branded magazines for reliability
• According to Colion, the folding stock gives the 18-inch barreled rifle better maneuverability than a comparable AR-15, which he identifies as one of its main advantages
• Colion argues the Mini-14 is a good, reliable firearm but rejects claims it’s superior to the AR-15, stating he wouldn’t choose it over an AR-15 despite appreciating its nostalgic appeal and unique features
