Why Training At Gun Ranges Doesn't Prepare You For Shooting In Tough Terrain

About this video

Colion presents footage from a training course he took with instructor Buck Doyle in Utah, focusing on shooting in unmanicured natural terrain. He explains that most gun ranges are designed to make shooting easier, but real-world outdoor shooting presents unpredictable challenges like uneven rocks, foliage obstructions, wind, and awkward shooting positions. Colion walks viewers through his attempts to engage targets down in a valley while adapting to what nature provides, emphasizing the importance of finding shooting positions, reading feedback, and working around environmental obstacles.

Key takeaways

• Colion teaches that shooting in natural, unmanicured terrain requires adapting to unpredictable obstacles like rocks, trees, foliage, and wind that don’t exist on typical gun ranges.
• He demonstrates the importance of finding effective shooting positions in the field, using available cover and concealment, and modifying stance (sitting, kneeling) based on what the terrain allows.
• Colion emphasizes the need to engage targets continuously while watching for bullet impact feedback in order to make real-time adjustments for wind and obstructions.
