Amazon KDP Scams & Frauds

About this video

Dale warns that many Trustpilot complaints about KDP actually describe third-party scammers, because KDP itself is free, takes only a cut of sales revenue, and does not sell editing, marketing packages, or other premium services. He discusses KDP’s June 11, 2024 community post on fraudulent publishing websites, noting Amazon has sued companies falsely claiming affiliation and misusing its trademarks. He distinguishes Kindle Direct Publishing, open to everyone for self-publishing, from Amazon Publishing, its trade arm that is not directly accessible to most authors. He then walks through scam signals Amazon lists: false urgency, requests for personal or login information, payment demanded outside Amazon or by gift card or wire transfer, fake order confirmations, tech-support, Prime membership, and account-suspension messages. His core defense is to never click links or open attachments, but to go directly to Amazon or the KDP dashboard and use Contact Us. He closes with account hygiene: enable two-step verification, use strong passwords of up to 20 characters, keep contact details current, never share login credentials, and report suspicious activity to Amazon or at reportfraud.ftc.gov.

Key takeaways

• KDP is free to use and does not sell editing, formatting, or marketing services — anyone charging for ‘KDP’ services under Amazon branding is a red flag.
• Watch for false urgency, requests for passwords or banking details, off-Amazon payment, gift-card payment, and fake order or suspension notices.
• Never click email links or open attachments; verify any issue by going directly to Amazon or your KDP dashboard and using Contact Us.
• Protect the account with two-step verification, strong unique passwords, and current email and phone details.
• Never share your KDP login — it risks hacking and can trigger Amazon’s multiple-account concerns for both parties.
