How to Self Publish a Book Step By Step on KDP in 10 Minutes

About this video

An updated step-by-step KDP walkthrough covering ebook, paperback and hardcover in one session. Dale creates the ebook via the Create button, sets up a series page if needed, limits the description to 3,000 characters, picks one to three categories and seven keyword phrases, and warns that a pre-order requires everything ready within 72 hours of launch. He advises against DRM, recommends EPUB over DOCX/KPF for fewer formatting problems, and explains the newer AI-content disclosure: grammar help, outlining and character profiles count as AI-assisted, while AI-written text, images or translations count as AI-generated. He restates the royalty rules he describes: 70% for ebooks priced $2.99–$9.99, 35% outside that range, with a delivery fee only at 70%. Print follows with its own categories and print-specific keywords, a free or owned ISBN, PDF interior and cover, and 60% of list price minus print costs; expanded distribution lowers royalties and runs through Ingram. Hardcover needs a new ISBN and a different cover size, and has no expanded distribution. He recommends ordering a physical proof.

Key takeaways

• EPUB uploads preserve formatting better than DOCX/KPF
• Disclose AI use correctly: assistance vs. generation are different categories in KDP
• Ebooks: 70% royalty only at $2.99–$9.99; print: 60% minus print costs
• Use different, print-relevant categories and keywords for print editions
• Each format needs its own ISBN; hardcover also needs its own cover size
