KDP Publishing Distribution Rights | Where Amazon KDP Distributes

About this video

Dale answers a viewer question about whether publishing on Kindle Direct Publishing (KDP) limits distribution to other platforms, paperbacks, or audiobooks. He says publishing to KDP by itself imposes zero limitations on publishing to other online retailers and Kindle publishing alternatives, which he names as Smashwords, Draft2Digital, and Pronoun Publishing, his stated favorite. The exception is KDP Select: opting an ebook into KDP Select waives the right to distribute that ebook to other alternatives for up to 90 days at a time. He says in his opinion that 90-day exclusivity is a con, especially if the creator is not getting a big payout from the program, and advises opting out and waiting out the current 90-day period before publishing elsewhere. Regardless of KDP Select status, he says paperback and audiobook publication remains unlimited because ebooks, paperbacks, and audiobooks are different products with completely separate distribution rights. He notes there are exceptions involving other scenarios, giving translation services as an example, but does not develop them in this short video.

Key takeaways

• Publishing on KDP alone does not limit distribution to other online retailers or publishing alternatives.
• KDP Select imposes 90-day ebook exclusivity at a time, waiving distribution to other ebook platforms during that period.
• The creator says in his opinion the KDP Select exclusivity is a downside, especially without a big payout from the program.
• To go wide with an ebook, opt out of KDP Select and wait out the current 90-day period before publishing elsewhere.
• Paperback and audiobook rights are separate from ebook rights, so KDP Select status does not limit those formats.
