From Refugee to $1B Empire [Patrick Bet-David Interview]

About this video

This is Martell’s interview with Patrick Bet-David. Bet-David recounts living in Iran until age 10, his parents’ divorce, time in a refugee camp in Germany where he says he was stabbed in a fight, and coming to the United States to live in Glendale on welfare, walking to school and around gangsters and drug dealers, while avoiding drugs because his mother told him God would know. He says his father was his hero — he told a teacher at six he wanted to be a dad like him — and praises his father’s combination of unconditional love and straight accountability, and that his father never once failed to do something he said he would do. They became roommates from when Bet-David was 21 to 28, and his father, now 82 and living with them for 3 years, takes his oldest to kickboxing. On his childhood’s lesson for entrepreneurship, Bet-David says you are one decision away from ruining your life, you must learn people’s motives, and chaos in his upbringing trained him to handle chaos in business. He discusses anger as a nuclear button you must think before pressing, noting anger often comes from being cornered or lacking information, and describes a leader’s role as sometimes agitating and playing bad cop, illustrated by calling out egos by name in front of nearly 10,000 people at a company event. On why think in billions, he says it is not for everybody and only matters if there is a cause behind it requiring the highest level of pressure; he traces his own cause to studying capitalism and building a company that grew, he says, from 66 agents to 50,000 agents nationwide before being sold, crediting his wife Jennifer as the most important person in building it. He closes on faith, saying his confidence comes from relying on God, recounting praying during a miscarriage with their first child and subsequent unexpected bonuses and contracts.

Key takeaways

• Bet-David says his chaotic childhood taught him you are one decision away from ruining your life and to examine whether people’s motives are positive or manipulative
• He frames anger as a nuclear button: pressing it brings chaos and lost trust, and anger often signals being cornered or lacking information, so research before reacting
• A leader among leaders must sometimes agitate and make tough, unpopular calls rather than seek to be liked by everybody
• Bet-David says thinking in billions is not for everybody; it only makes sense if a cause behind it demands that level of pressure and responsibility
• He credits his wife Jennifer as the number one person behind building his company, and says his confidence ultimately comes from his faith in God
