What I Learned in Rehab...

About this video

Dan Martell argues entrepreneurship is the ultimate personal development program, rooted in his own story: at 17 he ended up in prison and was released to a rehab center, and after 11 months of therapy he discovered computer programming while helping Rick, the maintenance guy, clean out a cabin at an old church camp, finding a yellow book on Java programming and an old 486 computer and getting it to say ‘Hello world.’ He presents three reasons. First, struggles show the path: at any stage, from an idea to nine figures, friction reveals where you are not free, citing mentor Peter Crone’s quote that life presents people and circumstances to reveal where you’re not free, and the need to rewrite negative stories. Second, business is a forcing function for skills — from blog posts to sales calls — and his buyback principle is about hiring to buy back time and reinvesting it in skills, mindset and relationships. Third, the more you grow, the more you have to give: no business grows past its leader, growth compounds, and he says most wealth is created between ages 40 and 60.
