Essentials: How Your Brain Functions & Interprets the World | Dr. David Berson

About this video

Dr. David Berson explains how the nervous system builds perception, starting with vision. He describes seeing as a brain phenomenon: photoreceptors in the retina convert light into electrical signals, ganglion cells carry them to the brain, and conscious visual experience arises in the cortex, which is why we can also ‘see’ in dreams without eye input. Berson explains color vision as the decoding of different wavelengths by photoreceptor proteins tuned to different parts of the spectrum. He describes how the vestibular system stabilizes the image on the retina during head movement, the same strategy behind pigeons’ head-bobbing, and explains motion sickness as a visual-vestibular conflict, such as when the eyes see a stable phone screen while the body moves. He also presents plasticity: in people blind from early life, visual cortex can be repurposed for touch, supporting Braille reading.

Key takeaways

• Berson describes seeing as a brain phenomenon built from retinal signals sent by ganglion cells.
• Berson explains color as the decoding of wavelengths by differently tuned photoreceptors.
• Berson attributes motion sickness to conflict between visual and vestibular signals.
• Berson describes the vestibular system as stabilizing the retinal image during movement.
• Berson presents early-blind Braille reading as visual cortex repurposed for touch.
