The Science of MDMA & Its Therapeutic Uses: Benefits & Risks | Huberman Lab Podcast

About this video

Huberman explains MDMA, also called ecstasy or molly, distinguishing its properties from methamphetamine and from classic psychedelics such as psilocybin and LSD. He argues MDMA powerfully promotes release of both dopamine and serotonin, making it an empathogen that can increase social connectedness and empathy for others and oneself. Huberman emphasizes that as of June 2023 MDMA remained a Schedule 1 drug, highly illegal to possess or sell in the United States, and he stresses the difference between recreational use and therapeutic use for PTSD in clinical trials, which he describes as involving therapy sessions alongside the drug. He discusses possible neurotoxicity, noting MDMA can be neurotoxic but that therapeutic approaches aim to avoid toxicity, and he explains that serotonin and dopamine released together produce effects distinct from either alone, noting SSRIs given beforehand can block MDMA’s pro-social effects.
