Gary Zukav was born October 17, 1942 in Port Arthur, Texas. He graduated from Harvard University in 1964 and served as a U.S. Army Special Forces (Green Beret) officer in Vietnam, earning a Bronze Star. He came home profoundly changed by the war, spent years in personal reconstruction, and turned toward writing in the mid-1970s.
His first book, The Dancing Wu Li Masters: An Overview of the New Physics, was published in 1979. Written for general readers with no physics background, the book translated quantum mechanics, relativity, and the implications of particle physics into accessible prose. It won the 1980 American Book Award (National Book Award) for Science and has remained continuously in print for 45 years as one of the most influential popular-science books ever written.
In 1989 Zukav published The Seat of the Soul — a pivot from science to spirituality. The book introduced his signature concepts: authentic power (the alignment of personality with soul), multi-sensory perception (a capacity he argued is emerging in the human species), and spiritual partnership (relationship as a vehicle for spiritual growth rather than a means to external security). Oprah Winfrey featured Zukav on her show more than 30 times across the 1990s and 2000s. The book has sold more than 6 million copies worldwide.
Zukav co-founded the Seat of the Soul Institute with his longtime partner Linda Francis. The institute offers courses, online programs, and a practitioner-training curriculum that has trained a generation of Zukav-lineage spiritual coaches. He continues to write, teach, and do public conversations in his 80s.
His central teaching: authentic power is the alignment of your personality with the longing of your soul. When your personality wants what your soul wants, life has a different quality than when the two are at war. External circumstances become less important. Internal congruence becomes the measurement that matters.
