About Inky Johnson

Inky Johnson grew up in the Kirkwood neighborhood on the east side of Atlanta, in a two-bedroom home with 14 people, sleeping on the floor, and set out to be the first in his family to go to college. He earned a scholarship to the University of Tennessee and played defensive back there from 2004 through 2006, arriving, in his own words, as a 135-pound kid soaking wet in the SEC.

On September 9, 2006, in the second game of his junior year against Air Force, a tackle late in the game left him with nerve damage in his right shoulder and a permanently paralyzed right arm and hand. In his retelling, the doctor told him the good news was that they had saved his life, and the bad news was that he would probably never play football again. His career ended that night, and the work he is known for began with what he chose to make of it.

His teaching is built from that pivot. Perspective drives performance, he argues — how you view what you do will always affect how you do what you do. Control the controllables: attitude, focus, dedication, and energy, rather than circumstances you cannot change. Surrender to the process instead of chasing outcomes. And empty the bucket — give everything daily, on the principle that the harder you work, the harder it is to surrender.

His channel mixes three formats: recorded speeches to teams, schools, and companies; his Serendipity podcast, long conversations most often with co-host Oak about fatherhood, faith, forgiveness, gratitude, and growth; and short Inkspirations talks that compress the same frameworks into a few minutes. One story travels with him everywhere: Tennessee teammate Eric Berry chose to wear number 29 in the NFL in Inky’s honor, so the dream Inky chased is carried onto the field by someone he mentored.
