"Poison of Privilege" Inky Johnson | Serendipity Podcast - Season 2 Episode 12

About this video

Johnson hosts a conversation with his co-host Oak on the Serendipity podcast covering grief after learning a former player was murdered, the evolving college recruiting landscape following Deion Sanders’ historic signing at Jackson State, and the tension between parental protection and the village mentality in education. Johnson and Oak discuss processing loss through anger, the impact of NIL (name, image, likeness) rules on leveling the playing field between HBCUs and major programs, and what Johnson calls the ‘poison of privilege’—the danger of raising young people with unchecked expectations.

Key takeaways

• Johnson describes processing grief through anger and emphasizes the importance of giving yourself permission to fully grieve, process hurt, and heal before moving forward
• Johnson and Oak argue that NIL opportunities level the recruiting playing field between HBCUs and Power Five schools by removing financial disparity, allowing student-athletes to choose based on fit rather than obligation
• Johnson distinguishes between the ‘joys of privilege’ (honoring ancestors’ sacrifices) and the ‘poison of privilege’ (expecting others owe you something), arguing that character matters more than credentials or occupation
