John Gretton “Jocko” Willink is a retired United States Navy SEAL, author, podcast host, and leadership consultant. Known for his disciplined approach towards leadership and life, Willink has become an influential figure in the fields of motivational speaking and leadership coaching.

Military Career

Willink was born on September 8, 1971, in Torrington, Connecticut. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1990 and spent 20 years in the U.S. Navy SEAL Teams, a period during which he saw intense combat action and held several leadership positions.

Perhaps most notably, Willink served as the commander of SEAL Team Three’s Task Unit Bruiser during the Battle of Ramadi in the Iraq war. His unit became the most highly decorated Special Operations Unit of the Iraq War, and Willink was awarded the Bronze Star and Silver Star for his service.

Post-Military Career: Author, Podcast Host, and Leadership Consultant

After retiring from the Navy in 2010, Willink co-founded Echelon Front, a leadership consulting company that helps businesses in various industries build effective leadership strategies based on the principles learned in the military.

In 2015, Willink co-authored the book “Extreme Ownership: How U.S. Navy SEALs Lead and Win” with Leif Babin, another former Navy SEAL who served under him. The book, which outlines leadership philosophies rooted in their military experiences, became a New York Times bestseller.
