#70 New to Classes
About this video
McPhee discusses foundational shooting principles with student Ken Stewart, emphasizing quality practice over high round counts, the importance of addressing cognitive biases in learning, and the critical role of clear communication in effective instruction. They critique internet misinformation about shooting mechanics and advocate for the deliberate, incremental skill development that McPhee teaches in his courses.
Key takeaways
- McPhee argues that accountability for every round fired matters more than volume—shooting 100 rounds with focus beats shooting 1,000 rounds carelessly, as perfect practice builds better habits than mindless repetition
- McPhee contends that specific, descriptive language is essential to instruction; vague terms like ‘athletic stance’ create confusion, whereas breaking down exactly where each body part should be enables faster learning and correction
- McPhee teaches that new shooters should focus on foundational fundamentals (grip, stance, trigger control) rather than pursuing advanced tactical techniques, because mastering basics makes advanced skills easier and prevents cognitive bias from undermining performance
- McPhee criticizes internet shooting content for chasing views with flashy one-percent scenarios (tactical reloads, movement drills) while neglecting the ninety percent of solid marksmanship that actually matters in real situations
- McPhee emphasizes that video analysis allows objective feedback that students cannot argue with—providing recorded evidence of shooting errors enables more honest assessment and faster skill development than subjective in-person comments alone
