#84 SOB Podcast - Season 5 - Episode 1 - Spencer Pratt

About this video

McPhee and guest Spencer Pratt reconnect for Season 5 of the SOB podcast, discussing their journey from early podcasting days through McPhee’s experience in special operations and Pratt’s career in entertainment. They cover lessons learned about fame, financial management, the dilution of tactical training credibility on social media, and McPhee’s observations about real versus performative combat operations.

Key takeaways

• McPhee argues that real tactical operations appear ‘boring’ compared to action movies—effective raids are quiet, coordinated, and systematic rather than dramatic, emphasizing that ‘when you do things right, it does not look like an action movie’
• McPhee teaches that effective leadership in combat requires developing a ‘system of winning’ through repetition and scenario training where teams internalize communication codes and strategy, rather than focusing on individual shooting skills
• McPhee contends that social media has diluted legitimate tactical credibility by allowing viewers who watch training videos to conflate entertainment with actual skill, comparing it to expecting to cook better by watching cooking shows
• McPhee emphasizes the importance of ‘do not do’ lists in training—identifying hard safety rules based on the four fundamental firearm safety rules, which create shorter lists of prohibited actions than infinite tactical variations
• Pratt reflects that early investment in tangible assets like ammunition, night vision, and gold would have been wiser than spending on designer clothing during his period of fame
