#86 - SOB Podcast - S5 E3 Cipher Brief
About this video
McPhee and Brad, a retired Special Operations officer now COO of the Cipher Brief, discuss global security threats and current events. Brad provides a week-long intelligence summary covering China’s J-20 stealth fighter deployment, migration at the U.S. southern border, Ukraine military aid, NATO expansion, Russian missile tests, and concerning supply chain issues for U.S. weapons. McPhee and Brad assess current nuclear war risk at 4-7 on a 10-point scale and discuss broader geopolitical concerns including potential Chinese action against Taiwan.
Key takeaways
- McPhee argues mainstream media coverage of global events is heavily propagandized and Americans must actively seek factual reporting from credible sources rather than cable news outlets
- Brad recommends focusing on major national security threats like U.S.-China competition, cyber warfare, and AI development rather than allowing partisan media to inflame divisive domestic issues
- McPhee asserts the U.S. military has become complacent through prolonged peace, misused the term ‘war’ in recent conflicts, and failed to maintain strategic thinking on resource independence and manufacturing
- Brad argues the Ukraine conflict represents actual peer-to-peer warfare and will reshape U.S. military doctrine for decades, unlike counterinsurgency operations in the Middle East
- McPhee contends Ukraine should never have surrendered nuclear weapons under the Budapest Memorandum with Russia, and now no nation will voluntarily denuclearize
