Calls From The Road #56 Captured Green Berets

About this video

McPhee and guest Jason discuss the failed 2020 coup attempt in Venezuela involving former U.S. Green Berets who were captured after attempting to overthrow Maduro. McPhee analyzes the operation’s poor execution, questions whether it was government-sponsored or privately funded, and explores potential geopolitical implications. The conversation expands into broader topics including government overreach during COVID-19, China relations, and law enforcement accountability.

Key takeaways

• McPhee argues the operation was poorly executed, citing evidence like airsoft guns, expired military IDs, and personal financial cards left in operatives’ possession, suggesting either incompetence or intentional abandonment by potential government backers
• McPhee teaches the ‘soft enemy concept’ — that success against poorly-equipped or poorly-trained adversaries in places like Afghanistan and Iraq creates false confidence, leading operators to underestimate threats from entrenched authoritarian regimes with secret police networks
• McPhee contends the U.S. government should not risk military assets to rescue these individuals since they appear to be acting independently for financial gain rather than under official sanction, distinguishing their case from humanitarian workers
• McPhee expresses concerns about law enforcement enforcing pandemic restrictions without legal or moral justification, drawing parallels to historical authoritarian enforcement and warning this sets precedent for future government overreach
