Calls From The Road #60: Riots and King

About this video

McPhee discusses recent civil unrest and policing with guest King Kevin Casey, a professional fighter. McPhee analyzes excessive force incidents through the lens of his martial arts training and military experience, arguing that once a suspect is unconscious or handcuffed, continued force constitutes murder. He emphasizes leadership failures in police departments, burnout among officers, and the need for better training, while also addressing complexities around mental health crises, racial profiling, and the distinction between isolated bad actors and systemic problems.

Key takeaways

• McPhee argues that applying force to an unconscious or handcuffed person constitutes murder, as there is no remaining threat to justify continued violence
• McPhee contends that poor police leadership allows officers to operate at ’level 10’ aggression routinely, and that burnout and lack of mental health support drive excessive force
• McPhee recommends police departments invest in proper combatives training (like the ‘Mr. Goodbar’ program he describes) and de-escalation tactics rather than paying settlements for misconduct
• McPhee acknowledges racial profiling exists and recognizes the legitimate grievances of communities targeted by police, while framing the core issue as good versus evil rather than purely racial
• McPhee shares his military experience working alongside diverse teams with shared goals, noting he didn’t personally witness racism in the Army, though he acknowledges systemic issues exist in civilian law enforcement
