Google Maps Just Changed Driving Forever (New 3D Navigation)

About this video

Kevin rides along with the Google Maps team in Seattle to preview a new 3D driving navigation experience designed to make the map match what drivers actually see through the windshield. The update renders road layers realistically, so going under an overpass no longer looks like a turn, shows terrain and elevation for orientation, and treats tunnels as first-class parts of the route instead of slicing through buildings. Directions reference visible landmarks and businesses rather than vague distance cues, and the interface deliberately removes information, surfacing only what is needed at each moment to reduce wrong turns and lane mistakes. Gemini and AI analysis of satellite imagery, Street View, and road data help build the richer maps. He closes by showing how to turn the feature on in Maps settings under navigation, noting it initially requires a newer iPhone and eligible metro areas.

Key takeaways

• New 3D navigation renders road layers, terrain, and tunnels realistically
• Directions reference visible landmarks instead of vague turn cues
• The interface shows less, surfacing only what you need at that moment
• AI helps build detailed maps from imagery, Street View, and road data
• Enable it in Maps Settings under Navigation; rollout starts limited
