Microsoft Copilot Just Got a Massive Upgrade

About this video

Kevin reports from an early visit to Microsoft on a completely redesigned Microsoft 365 Copilot that brings chat, agents, app building, and Office together in one app. The new Home tab merges Copilot Chat and Cowork behind a single universal composer — described by the team with the line ‘you should never be able to use it wrong’ — where you state what you want and Copilot routes it to the right capability. Next is Autopilot, a personal always-on agent that learns and works in the background via Work IQ-connected routines. His example agent, Fern, suggests routines for a morning brief, watching for important changes, and suggested replies, and users can create their own routines. In Teams, Fern can be @mentioned like a colleague, but when added to a channel it is scoped only to that channel’s content, whereas outside a channel it is permissioned to whatever the user is permissioned to. Fern is shown populating a launch document from channel templates and booking a 30-minute team meeting. The Code tab lets non-coders describe an idea and build interactive tools, demoed with a desktop customer-order tracking widget, with hosting and sharing working like sharing a Word document from OneDrive. Finally, full-fidelity Word, Excel, and PowerPoint are embedded directly in Copilot, starting with those three apps, so Copilot-created documents retain context, ribbon, and live co-authoring instead of a severed export. The team frames Copilot’s reason to exist as deeply understanding enterprise context and work data to get things done.

Key takeaways

• New Home tab unifies Chat and Cowork in one universal composer that routes a request to the right tool so users do not have to choose
• Autopilot is an always-on personal agent powered by Work IQ that suggests and runs routines like morning briefs and suggested replies, and can be created custom
• In Teams, an Autopilot agent like Fern is scoped to channel content when added to a channel, otherwise limited to the user’s own permissions
• Code tab lets anyone without coding knowledge describe an idea and build interactive tools, with OneDrive-style hosting and sharing
• Full-fidelity Word, Excel, and PowerPoint now run inside Copilot, preserving context and co-authoring instead of exporting a disconnected copy
