Turn Your Phone Into a Webcam — Free & Easy Setup

About this video

Kevin shows how to use an iPhone or Android phone as a webcam for a Windows PC using the free app DroidCam, arguing phone cameras are usually far better than built-in laptop webcams so this is a quality upgrade with no new hardware. The phone app and a desktop client connect over Wi-Fi, after which the phone appears as a regular webcam in Teams, Zoom, Meet and OBS. He notes a Pro version for a one-time fee unlocks 4K video and removes the watermark, but says the free version works great for most people. Setup: install DroidCam from droidcam.app on the phone and grant camera and microphone permissions — the phone then displays its connection info — then install the DroidCam client on the computer (Windows or Linux; a dedicated OBS plugin is also offered for more control). In the client, Add Device auto-detects the phone; if detection fails, refresh the device list or manually enter a device name and the Wi-Fi IP address shown on the phone, optionally enabling phone audio capture. He finishes by selecting ‘DroidCam Video’ as the camera in Microsoft Teams to confirm it works.

Key takeaways

• DroidCam (free) turns an iPhone or Android phone into a PC webcam over Wi-Fi, usable in Teams, Zoom, Meet and OBS
• Phone cameras typically beat built-in laptop webcams, so the setup upgrades quality without buying hardware; Pro is a one-time fee for 4K and watermark removal
• Install both the mobile app (grant camera/mic permissions) and the Windows/Linux desktop client from droidcam.app; an OBS plugin is available
• If auto-detection fails, refresh the device list or manually add the device using the Wi-Fi IP shown in the phone app, with optional audio capture
• Once connected, select ‘DroidCam Video’ as the video device inside the meeting or streaming app
