Angela Duckworth: Keep the Goal, Reconsider the Strategy

A practical lesson

The Lesson

You have spent several sessions trying to learn a song, but the same transition keeps breaking down. More full run-throughs may give you more experience with the same mistake. Keep the musical goal in view and investigate the practice method.

Angela Duckworth’s Grit FAQ distinguishes commitment to an overarching goal from attachment to every lower-level strategy. Her Grit Lab course description also emphasizes practice and productive use of feedback. Grit, official FAQ. Grit Lab 101 information (material access currently paused).

A strategy should serve a goal. You can slow down a passage, isolate a transition, ask a teacher for feedback or choose an easier preparation exercise. Changing the strategy can preserve the larger purpose. It is also reasonable to reconsider the goal when your priorities or circumstances change.

Write down what improvement would look like before another session. A small observable feature is more useful than “be excellent.” You might aim to place a chord correctly or explain a concept without looking at the notes. The next attempt can then answer a focused question.

Reflection

  • What skill am I trying to develop?
  • Which part of the current approach is not helping?
  • What feedback could guide a different approach?

Practice

This is an original SelfGrowthVideos exercise inspired by the ideas above.

  1. Name the longer goal and one specific component skill.
  2. Describe the recurring difficulty using an observable example.
  3. Choose a different practice method or ask a qualified teacher for a targeted suggestion.
  4. Try the revised method in a short session and compare the same component afterward.

For a difficult guitar transition, practice moving between the two chord shapes slowly before returning to the song. If you are unsure about technique, seek instruction instead of forcing speed. Your question is whether the changed practice clarifies the movement.

Review

After the session, record what changed and what did not. Should you repeat, modify or replace the method? Do not use a difficult attempt as proof that you lack potential, or use grit as a reason to ignore pain, exhaustion or a goal that no longer fits.
