Priya Parker: Design a Study Circle Around a Real Need

A few people want to meet and work on their goals.

A practical lesson

The Lesson

A few people want to meet and work on their goals. “Let’s motivate each other” sounds welcoming, but leaves everyone unsure what the meeting is for. Choose one concrete need the group can address together.

Priya Parker emphasizes defining a gathering’s purpose, considering guests’ needs and using thoughtful structure and endings. Those ideas can help a small study circle become useful to the people who join it. The Art of Gathering, official book page. About Priya Parker.

A useful purpose helps you choose who to invite and what to do. A group for comparing study strategies will need different activities from a group for practicing job interviews. Make the purpose narrow enough to plan a first session and broad enough to respect participants’ different situations.

A host has work to do. Explain the format, keep time, offer people a chance to pass and end deliberately. Peer groups can help with practice and feedback, but they should not pressure anyone to disclose private goals or promise professional counseling. Participation can stay free and voluntary.

Reflection

  • What specific need would bring these people together?
  • What should participants leave with?
  • What would make the format accessible and respectful?

Practice

This is an original SelfGrowthVideos exercise inspired by the ideas above.

  1. Invite a few people to a single trial meeting with a clear purpose.
  2. Ask what would help them participate: timing, location, accessibility or a way to pass.
  3. Plan a short opening, one shared activity and a closing round. Tell people the structure in advance.
  4. End by asking what was useful and whether they want another meeting. Do not assume recurring commitment.

A first study circle might help each participant choose one question to investigate before the next class. Give everyone an optional brief turn, pair people to clarify their questions, and close with each person naming the resource they will consult.

Review

Afterward, compare the actual meeting with its purpose. Did people leave with a useful next step? Who had little opportunity to participate? Adjust the invitation or format before growing the group. A small meeting that serves its members is a useful beginning.
