Tony Robbins: Connect a Result, a Purpose and an Action

A practical lesson

The Lesson

Your to-do list says “research courses,” “update résumé” and “look for opportunities.” Those activities could continue indefinitely. Name the result they are meant to serve and the reason you care about it.

Tony Robbins’s RPM materials organize planning around a desired result, a purpose and actions that support it. Connecting those parts can make a task list easier to evaluate. RPM, official support explanation. Focus and RPM, official article.

A result gives activity a stopping point. “Identify two courses that meet my schedule and prerequisites” is easier to assess than “research education.” Purpose helps you decide whether that result deserves the time. You may be exploring a career direction, improving a skill or checking whether a course fits.

Actions should be proportionate to your resources. The term “massive action” in RPM does not require you to overload your day for this exercise. Make a small plan you can honestly attempt. If the result depends on someone else’s choice, distinguish your contribution from the outcome you cannot guarantee.

Reflection

  • What result would make this work useful?
  • Why does that result matter to me now?
  • Which action moves toward it most directly?

Practice

This is an original SelfGrowthVideos exercise inspired by the ideas above.

  1. Write a concrete result that you can evaluate.
  2. Add a brief purpose in your own words, avoiding a borrowed motivational slogan.
  3. List a few possible actions and choose the first realistic one.
  4. Set a check-in point and note any decision or response that depends on another person.

A course-search note might read: “Result: compare two suitable evening courses. Purpose: explore a direction without committing to a full qualification yet. First action: check prerequisites and schedules on the providers’ official pages.” Save the evidence instead of relying on a promotional summary.

Review

At the check-in, compare activity with the result. Did you gather the information you needed? Does the purpose still fit? Change the result or the next action if the evidence points elsewhere. Completing a planning note is preparation, not the completion of the goal.
