About Mark Manson

Mark Manson was born March 9, 1984 in Austin, Texas. He studied international business at Boston University and, after graduating, spent several years traveling and writing. He launched his first blog in 2009 focused on dating and interpersonal dynamics for men; published his first book Models: Attract Women Through Honesty in 2011 (a direct critique of the manipulative “pickup artist” industry then dominating the space); and by his late twenties had shifted the blog’s focus from dating to broader life philosophy.

The turning point came in September 2015 when Manson published a blog post titled “The Subtle Art of Not Giving a Fck” — a 2,500-word essay arguing that the problem with modern self-help was not that people cared too little, but that they cared about too many of the wrong things. Caring less, strategically, was the key to caring more about what actually mattered. The post went viral. HarperOne offered a book contract within months. The Subtle Art of Not Giving a Fck: A Counterintuitive Approach to Living a Good Life was published in September 2016.

The book hit #1 on the New York Times bestseller list and held top-10 positions for more than three years. It has now sold over 20 million copies in more than 65 languages, making Manson one of the most-translated living English-language authors. He followed with Everything Is F*cked: A Book About Hope (2019) — a more philosophical follow-up exploring Nietzsche, Kant, and the crisis of modern meaning-making — and co-authored Will Smith’s autobiography Will in 2021, a project that took him into extensive interview-and-ghostwriting territory and further expanded his writing range.

Manson continues to publish long-form essays on markmanson.net, runs the Subtle Art School online course platform, and hosts the long-running Mark Manson Podcast — currently on its third format, with hundreds of episodes spanning solo essays, interviews, and Q&A. His writing style — direct, profane, counter-intuitive, rigorously structured — has made him one of the most-imitated voices in English-language non-fiction of the past decade. Manson lives with his wife Fernanda (a Brazilian artist) outside of New York City.

His central teaching, compressed: happiness is not the correct metric. What you choose to struggle for is. You cannot avoid suffering; you can only choose which suffering you are willing to sustain in pursuit of what matters to you. Most modern misery is caused not by an absence of things to care about but by caring about too many wrong things — and the practical work of a good life is narrowing your fucks down to the things that actually deserve them. Clarity of values is the prerequisite to everything else.

The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F*ck

A Counterintuitive Approach to Living a Good Life

Manson's 2016 #1 NYT bestseller — 20M+ copies sold, 65+ languages. The book that made him a household name. Still the best starting point to his writing and philosophy.

Everything Is F*cked

A Book About Hope

Manson's 2019 follow-up — more philosophical, more ambitious, drawing on Nietzsche, Kant, and modern cognitive science to address the crisis of meaning in secular modernity.

Models

Attract Women Through Honesty

Manson's 2011 first book — still the single best direct critique of pickup-artist manipulation culture, focused instead on vulnerability, honesty, and character development.

Will (with Will Smith)

Will Smith's autobiography, co-written with Mark Manson

Manson's 2021 collaboration with Will Smith — a major departure into long-form biographical co-writing. Spent months at #1 on NYT bestseller list.
