Are Hypersonic Weapons Worth All the Hype?

About this video

Max explains hypersonic weapons, which he describes as missiles traveling faster than five times the speed of sound (Mach 5+). He outlines two main types: boost-glide missiles that use rocket boosters before gliding and cruise missiles with continuous engine power. Max reviews what he characterizes as an ongoing hypersonic arms race, citing claimed speeds for weapons from the U.S. (Mach 7-25), China (Mach 10+), and Russia (Mach 20), while noting North Korea’s claims lack credibility.

Key takeaways

• Max defines hypersonic weapons as traveling faster than Mach 5 (over 3,850 mph) and argues their extreme speed and mid-flight maneuverability make them nearly impossible to intercept.
• Max describes two propulsion methods: boost-glide systems that use rocket boosters then glide, and cruise missiles with continuous engine power throughout flight.
• Max claims the U.S., Russia, and China are engaged in a hypersonic arms race, with Russia claiming a Mach 20 Avangard missile and rumors of a U.S. Trident II reaching Mach 25.
• Max hopes hypersonic weapons will function as a deterrent similar to nuclear weapons’ mutually assured destruction doctrine, preventing their use between major powers.
