B-21 Raider is it Really Worth the Hype?

About this video

Max explains the B-21 Raider, the U.S. Air Force’s newest sixth-generation stealth bomber. He discusses why the Air Force is replacing the B-1 and B-2 with the B-21 while keeping the modernized B-52, arguing this realignment improves sustainment and economy of force. Max describes the B-21’s capabilities including enhanced stealth, optional unmanned operation, digital infrastructure, reduced maintenance costs, and global reach, and offers his analysis on why its smaller stingray-like design makes it more effective than the larger B-2.

Key takeaways

• Max explains the B-21 is named after the Doolittle Raid in WWII and is the first bomber of the 21st century, designed to replace the B-1 and B-2 while the B-52 remains as a stand-off bomber with cruise missiles
• According to Max, the B-21 costs $700 million per aircraft (in 2022 dollars including all support costs), compared to the B-2’s $2 billion per copy, and features sixth-generation characteristics including enhanced stealth materials and digital cloud infrastructure
• Max highlights that the B-21 can operate with or without pilots, enabling high-altitude missions and extended flight durations beyond human endurance, and was purpose-built for easier maintenance and lower operational costs than previous stealth aircraft
