Did the Taliban Just Shoot Down a US MQ-9 Spy Drone in Afghanistan?

About this video

Max analyzes reports of an MQ-9 Reaper drone that crashed in Afghanistan’s Wardak province on January 1, 2026. He presents this as breaking news and explains why he believes U.S. drones are still conducting intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance missions in Afghanistan despite the withdrawal. Max disputes Taliban claims that they shot the drone down with a MANPAD, arguing the crash site evidence suggests a lost-link glide rather than combat damage. He speculates that Iranian proxies may acquire the drone’s sensors and discusses geopolitical implications.

Key takeaways

• Max argues the crash site evidence does not support Taliban claims of shooting down the MQ-9 with a MANPAD, suggesting instead the drone lost its control link and glided into terrain.
• Max asserts that over-the-horizon surveillance of Afghanistan likely continues as part of trust-but-verify arrangements from the Doha agreements, with drones monitoring terrorist activity near the Pakistan border.
• Max speculates that Iran may obtain the drone’s sensitive optical sensors and electronic warfare systems through Taliban or proxy channels to reverse-engineer U.S. technology.
