Fighter Pilot Reacts To F-15 Dogfight Vs Mig-29

About this video

Max, a former F-15E Strike Eagle combat pilot, analyzes real-world footage and accounts from an Operation Desert Storm dogfight where Colonel Cesar Rodriguez and his wingman engaged Iraqi MiG-29s. Max explains how Rodriguez’s wingman shot down the first MiG with an AIM-7 missile after Rodriguez went defensive, then describes how a second MiG crashed while attempting to evade Rodriguez by diving toward the ground and failing to pull up in time. Max emphasizes the importance of maintaining spatial awareness during dogfights to avoid what he describes as the ground’s “100% kill ratio.”

Key takeaways

• Max explains that fighter pilots should approach every engagement, whether training or combat, assuming they’re facing the most skilled opponent to maintain peak performance
• Max describes how having AWACS support provides F-15s a significant tactical advantage over adversaries relying only on ground-based radar, comparing it to a “blanket” view versus looking through a “soda straw”
• Max argues that spatial awareness and avoiding the “hard deck” (minimum altitude) is critical in dogfights, noting that ground impact has a 100% fatality rate and that pilots losing track of altitude during maneuvering is more common than people might imagine
