This Venezuelan Oil Tanker Evaded the US Military's Naval Blockade

About this video

Max analyzes the attempted interception of the Bella 1, a Venezuelan oil tanker that avoided boarding by U.S. forces due to rough seas (10-15 foot swells) and turned back before reaching Venezuelan waters. He explains the broader U.S. naval blockade of Venezuela initiated December 16, 2025, which Max says has seized over 5 million barrels of sanctioned oil across multiple vessels. Max discusses the risks of maritime boarding operations, the “dark fleet” evasion tactics used by sanctioned tankers, and predicts the Bella 1 will likely be seized once conditions permit.

Key takeaways

• Max reports the Bella 1 avoided initial boarding due to 10-15 foot swells that made the operation too dangerous, and was approximately 1,200 nautical miles northeast of the Bahamas as of December 28th
• Max states the blockade has seized over 5 million barrels of oil worth approximately $1 billion, targeting 80% of Venezuela’s shadow oil trade through interceptions of vessels like the MV Skipper and MV Centuries
• Max explains that sanctioned tankers use “dark fleet” tactics including deactivating AIS transponders, GPS jamming, spoofing manifests, and ship-to-ship transfers at night to evade detection
• Max argues that boarding operations in high seas are extremely dangerous, citing the loss of two Navy SEALs in similar operations, and supports the decision to abort when risk exceeds operational benefit
