Thunderbird Fighter Pilot Reacts to DEVOTION Movie Trailer

About this video

Max, a former F-15E combat pilot and F-16 Thunderbirds demonstration pilot, reacts to the trailer for the film Devotion, which tells the story of Jesse Brown, the first Black carrier-qualified aviator, and his wingman Thomas Hudner during the Korean War. Max highlights Brown’s perseverance through adversity and his focus on being the best Naval aviator rather than dwelling on being the first Black pilot. Max connects the film’s themes of devotion to wingmen and overcoming adversity to his own combat experience and his encounters with Tuskegee Airmen, emphasizing that the film focuses on brotherhood in combat rather than politics or a “white savior” narrative.

Key takeaways

• Max explains that Jesse Brown was the first Black carrier-qualified aviator who focused on being the best Naval aviator he could be despite facing intense adversity and racism
• Max interprets the film as emphasizing devotion to one’s wingman above all else, with both Brown and Hudner testing and trusting each other based on performance rather than race
• Max recounts his own experience meeting Tuskegee Airmen after an air show, observing that they carried themselves with pride and a devotion to being excellent aviators despite the injustice they faced
