026 Dr Jason Piccolo

About this video

Dr. Jason Piccolo, a former federal agent with 19 years of experience across Border Patrol, Customs, and ICE, discusses his career trajectory from Army artillery through border enforcement. Piccolo recounts his time tracking migrants in San Diego’s mountains, explains operational realities that contradict common perceptions about border security technology, and describes the challenges agents face including high burnout rates. He emphasizes that effective border security requires a combination of physical barriers, personnel, and technology rather than any single solution.

Key takeaways

• Piccolo argues that effective border security cannot rely solely on technology or walls, but requires skilled agents on the ground tracking through difficult terrain.
• According to Piccolo, border agent burnout typically occurs within three to five years due to the repetitive nature of apprehending and releasing the same individuals, limited career advancement, and the challenge of combating experienced cartel organizations with constrained resources.
• Piccolo describes how before 2005-2006, Border Patrol used only single fingerprints rather than full ten-print identification, making it difficult to track repeat crossers or identify criminals among those apprehended.
