A Gold Star Widow's Fight For The Truth with Michelle Black | Mike Drop - Episode 74

About this video

Mike Ritland interviews Michelle Black, Gold Star widow of Special Forces Green Beret Brian Black, who was killed during the 2017 ambush in Niger. Black recounts her journey from meeting Brian before his military career, through his enlistment at age 27 and Special Forces training, to her fight for transparency following his death. She discusses the challenges of military spouse life, Brian’s deployments, and the inconsistencies she uncovered in official accounts of the Niger ambush that led her to write her book ‘Sacrifice.’

Key takeaways

• Michelle Black attributes her advocacy work to honoring the men who died in Niger, stating that only family members can stand up and demand accountability when service members are failed by leadership.
• Military spouses face unique hardships including constant relocation, isolation from family support, long communication blackouts during deployments, and the challenge of reintegrating their service member into family routines.
• Black describes receiving conflicting official accounts of the Niger ambush—varying enemy numbers (50 to 80+ insurgents) and shifting mission descriptions (exploitation vs. capture/detain)—which drove her investigation into what happened to her husband’s team.
