A Green Beret's First-Hand Account of Operation Viking Hammer | Ep. 254

About this video

Ritland interviews Mark Jaconia, a 20-year Army veteran and Green Beret, author of “One Green Beret.” They discuss Jaconia’s New England upbringing, his reading interests in philosophy and American history, his path from infantry to Special Forces, and his experiences during the Balkans deployment in Bosnia. Jaconia recounts the cultural and historical complexities of Yugoslavia’s collapse and describes the unconventional peacekeeping mission he participated in as a young SF soldier.

Key takeaways

• Jaconia attributes his military career partly to his father, a Vietnam Silver Star recipient, and describes growing up in rural Connecticut with limited means but positive memories.
• According to Jaconia, he struggled through Ranger School with multiple recycles spanning over 200 days before graduating, losing significant weight in the process.
• Jaconia recounts his deployment to Bosnia in the 1990s as part of a joint commissioned observer mission, embedding in local populations for intelligence collection during the post-Dayton Accords peacekeeping effort—a mission very different from conventional combat.
