Andy Stumpf Recounts His Most Dangerous Military Jump

About this video

Ritland recounts in detail his worst parachute jump experience in Afghanistan, where he tandem-jumped with an interpreter who panicked, had never flown before, and fought him on the way out of the aircraft. After landing 50 kilometers off-target covered in the passenger’s vomit, Ritland reflects on lessons learned. He then describes the 2023 Legacy Expeditions project—completing seven jumps across seven continents in just over six days to raise funds for Folds of Honor scholarships.

Key takeaways

• Ritland describes his worst jump as a nighttime tandem operation in Afghanistan where his passenger panicked mid-flight, resulting in an unstable exit, equipment failure, and landing approximately 50 kilometers off-target
• According to Ritland, experience in high-stress activities like skydiving or jujitsu increases situational awareness over time, allowing practitioners to notice details they would have missed as beginners
• Ritland’s 2023 team completed seven jumps on seven continents in six days, six hours, and six minutes using only commercial flights (plus one charter after FAA system failure), raising hundreds of thousands of dollars for Folds of Honor educational scholarships
