Andy Stumpf: The Real Difference Between Regular SEAL Teams and DEVGRU

About this video

Former Navy SEAL Mike Ritland recounts his upbringing in liberal Santa Cruz, California, where despite the political environment, his parents’ support and early construction work instilled drive. He describes first learning about SEALs from his Vietnam veteran father at age 11, enlisting at 17, and progressing through BUD/S to SEAL Team Five and eventually screening for SEAL Team Six (Development Group). Ritland contrasts conventional SEAL teams with Development Group, explaining how increased budget and focused training at the latter enabled specialized kinetic proficiency.

Key takeaways

• Ritland credits his work ethic and drive to working construction jobs for his father from age 10-11, not to the political environment of his hometown
• After hearing about SEALs from his Vietnam veteran father around age 11-12, Ritland became singularly focused on that goal, skipping college prep entirely to enlist at 17
• According to Ritland, the main difference between conventional SEAL teams and Development Group (SEAL Team Six) is budget and focus—Development Group has vastly more resources and specializes in kinetic operations rather than being a jack-of-all-trades
