Astronaut Rescue 101 - Operator Solutions with CEO Brandon Daugherty | Mike Drop Clip #180

About this video

Brandon Daugherty, CEO of Operator Solutions, describes his astronaut rescue company, which he founded three years ago after working for NASA developing astronaut rescue programs for the military. Daugherty explains that while Air Force PJs rescue government astronauts, his company provides rescue services for commercial space passengers, primarily working with Axium and Space Perspectives. He details the 90-day preparation process, which includes assembling teams of 40-60 people (many reserve PJs), training on spacecraft-specific hazards like hypergolic fuels, and positioning assets including C-130s, helicopters, and boats before launches.

Key takeaways

• Daugherty founded the first astronaut rescue company for the commercial sector after helping NASA develop the military’s astronaut rescue program
• The company employs reserve and retired military personnel (particularly PJs) and uses military checklists and procedures adapted for commercial space rescue operations
• Rescue operations require specialized training for space-specific hazards including toxic hypergolic rocket fuels and treating astronauts affected by microgravity
• The company developed a unique boat-based rescue capability for pad abort scenarios, positioning rescue assets closer than military protocols to address 25-minute range closures after incidents
