Astronaut Rescue Air Force PJ Brandon Daugherty Part One

About this video

Brandon Daugherty, an Air Force Pararescue (PJ) with 10 years active duty and 12 years reserve service, discusses his civilian company Operator Solutions, which provides astronaut rescue services for commercial spaceflight. Daugherty explains that after helping develop NASA’s military astronaut rescue program, he founded the first private company offering this capability—complete with C-130s, helicopters, parachute teams, and specialized equipment—to support commercial space companies like Axiom. He describes the detailed preparation, training, and alert postures required for each mission, and shares his vision of eventually conducting rescues from orbit.

Key takeaways

• Daugherty founded Operator Solutions to provide astronaut rescue services for commercial spaceflight after spending years at NASA helping develop the military’s rescue program.
• The company maintains full rescue capability including C-130 aircraft, helicopters, jump-trained personnel, and specialized equipment for recovering space capsules, filling a gap that neither the Coast Guard nor military adequately covers for commercial missions.
• Daugherty states the company allows highly trained special operations personnel (PJs and others) to earn competitive contractor-level pay while staying stateside with their families, rather than deploying overseas.
